HIDDEN HISTORY OF THE PIONEER CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PIONEER CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP IN NIGERIA;
CYON was formed in 1982 as an entity called the Youth Club at St. Francis Parish, Otukpo under the then Markudi Diocese where a set of about twelve (12) individuals were inaugurated by an Irish Priest, Rev. Fr. O`Neill Joseph of Blessed memory. This Youth club was letter taken to St. Mary's Parish Otukpo, St. Stephan's Otukpa, St. Bernard's Okpoga and Markudi as well. With time, it spread across the entire Diocese and beyond, to Lafia, Abuja and throughout Nigeria at large. This intimated the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) in 1986 to call for the first ever National Youth Congress in Ogoja, Cross River State. It was from that Congress that the name, Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON) was adopted for the Nigeria's Catholic Youth.
